Vydritsa (Bratislava)

Vydritza in the 19th century or early 20th century (right)

Vydritsa ( in Slovak Vydrica , German: Weidritz / Weidritz , sometimes Wödritz / Hungarian. Vödric ) is a now defunct settlement under the Bratislava castle in the Old Town.

The settlement arose no later than 1360, most likely, after that the inhabitants of the settlement of the same name, previously located in the current southern part of the Bratislava district "Mlynska (Mill) Valley", moved here. New Vydritsa initially consisted of one street, located outside the gates of the city walls (from the 15th century, the gates also began to be called Vydritsky Gate ).

From the 18th century until the outbreak of World War II, Vydritsa and its environs were known as the quarter of prostitutes. The vast majority of Vydritsa houses were demolished in 1960-1970. in connection with the construction of a new bridge over the Danube. Re-development of this territory is now planned.
