World Boxing Championship 2011

The 16th World Boxing Championship was held at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex in Baku ( Azerbaijan ) from September 22 to October 10, 2011 [1] .

The championship of the planet in amateur boxing , held under the auspices of AIBA , for the first time gathered such a large number of participants. The previous record of participating in the world championships was established in 2009 at the World Championships in Milan ( Italy ) [2] [3] .

This tournament was qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games . 685 boxers from 127 countries competed for the coveted licenses [4] .

Qualifying fights began on September 26, the final fights were held on October 8.

Interesting Facts

  • Because of the referee's mistake in the 1/8 finals, Ukrainian boxer Vasily Lomachenko was considered a defeat in a duel with the Brazilian Robson Conceisao . The Ukrainian Boxing Federation filed a protest, which resulted in the victory being awarded to a Ukrainian boxer [6] . As a result, Vasily won the gold, becoming a two-time world boxing champion.
  • Near the media, information was spread about the alleged attack on Armenian boxers [7] , that one of the spectators threw a stone at Andranik Hakobyan [8] . However, later the News Agency Armenia reported that the Boxing Federation of Armenia refuted the information that an Armenian attacker was attacked [9] .
