Biography

Born on August 8, 1931 in the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, in a Shinto family. I learned about Orthodoxy from my school friend, who brought him to an Orthodox church. A year after that, in 1946, he was baptized with the name Cyril in the Transfiguration Church of the city of Sapporo.

After graduating from college in his hometown, in 1954 he entered St. Vladimir Theological Seminary in New York , which he graduated in 1958.

On January 19, 1961, at the Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral, the Archbishop of Tokyo, Nikon (de Greve), was ordained deacon , and on January 24 of the same year, he was ordained a presbyter .

From 1961 to 1965 he served in the Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral .

Since 1965 - rector of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Osaka .

In 1977 he was transferred by the rector to the Transfiguration Church in Sapporo, where he served until 1999.

The archpriest was elevated to the dignity. Widowed.

On June 14-15, 1999, a meeting of the clergy of the autonomous Japanese Orthodox Church was held, at which it was decided to submit to the patriarch and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church three candidates worthy of being elected and ordained bishop to replace the vacant bishopric chairs of Japan - the widowed archpriests Cyril Arihara and Jude Nushiro and celibate priest Andrei Tsuji .

On July 11-12 of that year, an extraordinary Local Council of the Japanese Church was held in Tokyo, at which, in the presence of the representative of the Cyriarchal Church, Archbishop of Kaluga and Borovsky Clement , it was unanimously decided that all three candidates proposed by the clergy meeting to submit to the patriarch and the Holy Synod . In August 1999, selected candidates were invited to Russia, where for a month they got acquainted with the life of the Russian Orthodox Church, its dioceses and monasteries.

On August 20 of the same year, in the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, he was tonsured a monk with the name Peter in honor of St. Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow .

On September 6, 1999, in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II was elevated to the rank of hegumen .

On October 6 of the same year, by the decree of the Holy Synod, it was determined to be the bishop of Yokohama, the vicar of the Tokyo diocese , with the assignment of the temporary administration of the Tokyo diocese.

October 8, 1999 in the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, Patriarch Alexy II was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite .

On the same day, a naming was held in the Throne Hall of the Patriarchal Chambers of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and on October 9 in the Great Cathedral in honor of the Don Icon of the Mother of God in the Don Monastery of Moscow for the Divine Liturgy, the bishop consecration was headed by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II. It was served by: Metropolitans Krutitsky and Kolomensky Yuvenaly (Poyarkov) , Smolensky and Kaliningrad Kirill (Gundyaev) , Omsk and Tarsky Theodosius (Protsyuk) ; Archbishops Anatoliy of Kerch (Kuznetsov) , Arseny of Istra (Epifanov) , Sergius of Ternopol and Kremenets (Gensitsky) ; bishops Korsunsky Innokenty (Vasiliev) , Turovsky and Mozyrsky Peter (Karpusyuk) , Orekhovo-Zuevsky Alexy (Frolov) , Tiraspolsky and Dubossarsky Justinian (Ovchinnikov) .

On March 4, 2000, at the Extraordinary Local Council of the Japanese Orthodox Church on March 3-5, the same year, he was elected Primate of the Japanese Church, and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II approved and blessed the election by the Archbishop of Tokyo, Metropolitan of All Japan, on March 7, 2000. He was elected Primate when he was already in the hospital.

Already in April 2000, in connection with poor health, he sent a message to Patriarch Alexy II and the Metropolitan Council of the Church of Japan with a request to resign from the post of Primate. In a response letter dated April 24, 2000, the patriarch deeply regretted the resignation and blessed the convening of the Extraordinary Local Council of the Japanese Church, which on May 6, 2000 elected Bishop Daniel of Kyoto as the new primate.

Died of cancer on May 10, 2000 in Tokyo after a serious illness. The funeral service took place on May 12 of the same year in the Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral after the Divine Liturgy. The funeral was performed by the elected Primate of the Japanese Orthodox Church, Bishop Daniel of Kyoto. The burial took place on May 16 at the Japanese Orthodox cemetery in the city of Hakodate . The burial ceremony was performed by the Bishop of the Sendai Seraphim together with the clergy of the Sendai diocese.
