The early years

Hetherington was born in 1970 in Birkenhead , grew up in Southport . He graduated from Stonyhurst College, as well as Lady Margaret College of Oxford University . Hetherington decided to associate his life with photography after traveling in India , China and Tibet [5] . He studied photography art under the guidance of Daniel Meadows and Colin Jacobson in 1996 in Cardiff .

Career

The first step in the field of photojournalism for Hetherington was the work of a full-time photographer in the London newspaper The Big Issue . He spent several years in West Africa, particularly in Liberia , Sierra Leone, and Nigeria , where he documented political unrest and its impact on everyday life. In 2006, he worked as an investigator for the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on Liberia [6] . In 2007, Hetherington won the World Press Photo international photojournalism contest for photographing a haggard American soldier in a bunker in Afghanistan [7] . The photo was taken for Vanity Fair magazine , where he worked as a photographer at the time. In 2007 and 2008, Hetherington made several trips to Afghanistan with the writer Sebastian Junger, as a result of which they shot the military documentary Restrepo , which is a chronicle of the life of a small American detachment in the Korengal valley [8] . The film was nominated for an Oscar, and also received an award at the Sundance Film Festival in the category of Best Documentary.

Doom

Tim Hetherington died on April 20, 2011 during the Civil War in Libya during the shelling of the city of Misurat [9] . According to some reports, he was killed by a mortar shell [10] , according to others - he died as a result of shelling from a hand anti-tank grenade launcher [11] . Photographer Chris Hondors was also killed along with him. In Libya, Tim worked on his new project on humanitarian difficulties during military conflicts. The day before his death, he posted on Twitter the following message: “I am in the besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Random artillery fire from the forces of Gaddafi. There is no trace of NATO ” [8] .

Hetherington was engaged to Idil Ibrahim, with whom he planned to get married in 2011. [12]
