1937 in the history of the fine arts of the USSR

The year 1937 was marked by a series of events that left a noticeable mark on the history of Soviet visual art.

Events

  • May 30 - An exhibition of painting, drawing and sculpture [1] opened in Leningrad at the Actor's House.
  • Sculptor Manizer Matvey Genrikhovich was elected chairman of the Leningrad Union of Soviet Artists , replacing N. E. Radlov in this post [2] .
  • I.I. Brodsky was awarded the Grand Prix of the international exhibition in Paris for the painting “Speech by V.I. Lenin at the Putilov Factory”.

  • The sculptural group “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman” was created for the Soviet pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris by sculptor Vera Mukhina and architect Boris Iofan . The sculpture was called the " standard of socialist realism " in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia [3] . An outstanding monument of monumental art, "the ideal and symbol of the Soviet era" [4] . In August 1939, the sculpture was installed on a pedestal in front of the Northern entrance to the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (now the All-Russia Exhibition Center ). In 2003-2009, the restoration of the sculptural group was carried out, accompanied by its analysis into 40 fragments. The bearing framework of the composition was significantly strengthened, all parts of the sculpture were cleaned and treated with special anti-corrosion compounds. The sculpture was installed on a new pedestal pavilion specially erected for it, repeating the proportions of the original Iofan pavilion of 1937 . The grand opening of the monument took place in Moscow on December 4, 2009 [5] [6] [7] .
  • A. N. Samokhvalov was awarded the Grand Prix of the international exhibition in Paris for the panel “Soviet Physical Culture”, made for the Soviet Pavilion, and the Grand Prix for the illustrations to the “History of one city” by ME Saltykov-Shchedrin, as well as the Big Gold Medal for the painting "Girl in a T-shirt . " In the same year, the artist wrote one of his most famous paintings - Metrostroevka with a drill (1937, RM ).
  • On November 2, new ruby Kremlin stars lit up over Moscow. To the four towers with the stars was added another, which had no earlier ending in the form of an eagle, - Vodovzvodnaya . New ruby ​​stars were also made according to sketches by the People's Artist of the USSR , the main artist of the Bolshoi Theater, academician F. F. Fedorovsky .
  • December 23 at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad, opened the "Exhibition of diploma works of graduates of the 1919 qualification” [8]

  • June 1 - Inna Shirokova , Russian Soviet painter, Honored Artist of the RSFSR .
  • August 1 - Orlov Gennady Vasilyevich , Russian Soviet painter and teacher (died in 1998 ).
  • October 10 - Viktor Vasilevich , Russian Soviet painter.
