History of construction and service
Built in Argentina, at the AFNE shipyard, based on the drawings of the US Navy 's De Soto County tank assault ships. Launched in 1968, put into operation on November 2, 1978.
He participated in the Falkland War . During the operation, Rosario landed 20 LVTP-7 , armored personnel carriers and amphibians LARC-V , as well as companies D and E of the 2nd Marine Corps Battalion in York Bay . With the arrival of British ships in the war zone did not go to sea. Landing capacity - 700 paratroopers, 23 medium tanks , 8 amphibious LCVP transporters.
In 1997, decommissioned and scrapped. After its cancellation, options for acquiring Newport - type landing ships or San Marco-type landing helicopter-docking ships in Italy (which would drastically increase the possibility of transferring and landing marine corps) were considered, however, in the absence necessary funds, none of these transactions to date have not taken place [3] . The planned purchase in 2006-2007 of France, the landing helicopter dock ships of the type "Hurricane" also failed. The fact is that “Hurricanes” were built in the 1950s , when no one cared about the environmental features of materials, ships were built using asbestos , lead , and mercury .
