Overview
Despite the fact that it was the third long-playing record by Buddy Holly, the songs that entered her were recorded one and a half to two years before her release at the earliest sessions of the singer in a large professional studio in Nashville . In the sound of the recordings there is a touch of country [1] , which also touched “ That'll Be the Day ”, presented here in its earliest version (the new version of 1957 will become a hit single). The producer of the sessions was Owen Bradley, who, along with the popular Nashville session pianist Floyd Kramer , will become a key figure in the future of the Nashville country sound . The Picks vocal ensemble took part in the re-singing. Holly, Sonny Curtis (solo guitar) and Jerry Allison (drums) soon, in 1957, formed the band The Crickets , under whose name they released new records.
Released at the same time, in 1956, singles with recordings from these sessions - “Blue Days, Black Nights” and “Modern Don Juan” - were not successful, and Decca Records postponed the recorded material. However, by the beginning of 1958, Buddy Holly became one of the most successful rock and roll artists, prompting the label to release old records.
In 1967, Decca Records re-released an album called The Great Buddy Holly in a new cover and with the original mix of “Ting-A-Ling”. In 1975, the album was released on MCA Records under the name The Nashville Sessions with the addition of another take of “Rock Around With Ollie Vee”.
