The ship was built in 1988, has a displacement of 6,600 tons, a length of 117 meters. Academician Ioffe and Academician Sergei Vavilov were built on a joint project. Both vessels in the central part have a vertical shaft with a diameter of about two meters, overlooking the main deck in a special room. Having lowered the receiver or emitter with the help of a winch through the shaft, one vessel can radiate and the other can receive acoustic signals. Vessels were used for experiments on the distant propagation of sound in the ocean.

The ship belongs to the Institute of Oceanology. P.P. Shirshova RAS .
