Estuary (REP complex)

"Estuary" - Soviet / Ukrainian ground-based mobile complex of electronic suppression of aircraft guidance lines. Designed to protect aircraft and land objects from enemy aviation strikes by radio suppression of its guidance lines from air and ground control points in the frequency ranges 100-400 and 960-1215 MHz [1] . Created at the β€œResearch Institute of Integrated Automation” (NIIKA) [2] .

"Estuary" is able to detect, classify and suppress the channel of the gunner of enemy aircraft, as a result of which his radio communication with the attack aircraft will not take place. In particular, β€œEstuary” is capable of reliably jamming on-board receivers of information and commands at distances up to 200 km and reliably detects signals of radio channels at distances up to 450 km.

Design Description

The Liman complex consists of 12 pieces of equipment: the Liman-PU control center, jamming stations (Liman-P1 and Liman-P2) and consists of four main elements: 1) a radio-receiving receiver; 2) receiving and transmitting antenna signals; 3) digitizing radio signal converters; 4) amplifiers [2] .

Two types of work of the radio electronic suppression stations of the complex are possible: autonomous and centralized, according to the commands of the control center of the Liman-PU complex. The complex has two modes of operation: passive and active. In passive mode, the complex detects radio lines - the object of suppression by detecting radio signals, measuring their parameters (analysis) and classification (determining the membership of radio lines - objects of suppression). In active mode, the complex emits an interfering signal at the frequencies of the operating radio links - suppression objects.

The control point and stations of the complex "Liman-PU", "Liman-P1" and "Liman-P2" are made on the basis of a high-traffic carrier vehicle and a van body (equipped with a life support system). It is possible to use a carrier vehicle such as KrAZ, KAMAZ, ZIL or another type. Power supply of products is carried out from an industrial power supply network or a trailed power plant - by three-phase alternating current with a frequency of 50 Hz, voltage of 380 Β± 10% V.

Principles of Operation

The objects of radio suppression of the complex are:

  • all types of VHF radio communication channels and guidance of the frequency range 100-400 MHz, used for crew interaction during an air operation; for guiding aircraft to air and ground targets from air and ground control points; to transfer intelligence from the aircraft to the control point; for guidance of aircraft on ground targets by advanced aircraft pilots;
  • communication channels, control and navigation in the frequency range 960–1215 MHz (type JTIDS, TACAN).

A distinctive feature of the complex is the effective suppression of modern noise-protected radio channels using the program frequency hopping mode (HFCH), as well as HFM in conjunction with the expansion of the radio signal spectrum (FHSS). This is achieved due to the high speed of the radio intelligence of the complex, the use of original correlation methods for detecting noise-like radio signals, and the high energy potential of the interfering signal. To create a high energy potential, broadband active transmitting phased array antennas (AFAR) are used.
