History
The order for the construction of a submarine was given on November 21, 1940 . The boat was laid down on December 6, 1941 at the Hovaldsverke shipyard , Kiel , under construction number 21, launched on January 23, 1943 , entered service on March 13, 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Heinz Gessler.

Service history
The boat made 4 combat trips, sank one auxiliary warship with a displacement of 545 brt , damaged one vessel with a displacement of 7,934 brt . Sunk July 5, 1944 in the English Channel , in the area with the coordinates of depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Wanderer and the British frigate HMS Tavy . 48 people died, 1 survived.
This boat was equipped with snorkel no later than April 1944.
