The Shackleton incident - events associated with the shelling of the Argentinean destroyer Almirante Storni of the British research ship Shackleton in February 1976 [1] .
History
On February 4, 1976, the Shackleton vessel, located 6 miles from the Falkland Islands , was bombarded several times by a destroyer , which motivated the shelling by the fact that the British were in the territorial waters of the Republic of Argentina [2] . This happened during the period of exacerbation of the Anglo-Argentinean negotiations over the ownership of the Falklands. The government of Argentina thus pursued a policy of “pinpricks” [3] .
The UK administration took the incident as a challenge. After some time, a plan was adopted to conduct a demonstration of force ( Operation Jorniman ).
