Content
The early years
Lane was born in 1956 in Jersey City , New Jersey , into a family of Irish-American Catholics [1] [2] . At birth, he received a name as Joseph in honor of his uncle, a Jesuit priest [3] . His father, Daniel, drove trucks and was a talented tenor, but died of alcoholism in 1967, when Lane was eleven. His mother, Nora, was a housewife and secretary; she suffered from manic-depressive psychosis , and died in 2000 [4] [5] [6] . Lane also has two brothers - Daniel Jr. and Robert [7] . Lane studied at Catholic schools, where even then he had an acting talent: he was recognized as the “Best Actor” at St. Peter's Preparatory High School in 1974.
Lane twice (in 2013 [8] and 2015 [9] ) was nominated for inclusion in the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
Career
1970s - 1980s
Lane by scholarship was admitted to the College of St. Joseph ( Eng. Saint Joseph's University ), and went there with his brother Daniel. On the day of his arrival at college, he found out that his acting scholarship did not cover living expenses and studies, and decided to leave in order to earn money during the year [7] . Since an actor under the name Joseph Lane was already registered with the actor’s union, he changed his name to Nathan in honor of Nathan Detroit, the character of the musical Guys and Dolls [10] . He moved to New York , where, after much work, he was able to start his career as an actor, starting with comedy stand-up shows with Patrick Stack [11] [12] , and then in non-Broadway productions in a number of local theaters . Lane made his Broadway debut in 1982 in a revived version of Noel Coward ’s production of “This Laughter” (for his role he was nominated for the Drama Desk Award) [13] . The second time he appeared on Broadway in 1983 in the musical "Merlin" with Chita Rivera and Doug Henning. Later, Lane took part in a number of productions, including the musical Wind in the Willows [14] .
1990s
In 1992, Nathan Lane ended up in the revived version of the musical Guys and Dolls . Performing the role of the same Nathan Detroit, from whom he once borrowed a name, earned him the first nomination for the Tony Award, as well as the Drama Desk [15] and the Prize of the External Society of Critics [16] . In the same 1992, he won the Obie Award.
Nathan worked quite actively with his close friend, screenwriter Terrence McNally. After a series of Broadway productions, he met Stephen Sondheim . For the first time, they worked together in The Assassins and The Wise Men. Sondheim and Lane will meet again in 2004, while working on the musical “The Frogs” in Lincoln’s center. Stephen even wrote a song for Nathan, which he performed in the movie Birdcage . This film earned Lane a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical [17] .
The matter was not limited to McNally and Sondheim - Lane played in many off-Broadway productions of the time, among them: Measure for Measure , The Common Pursuit and The Film Society.
By the end of the 90s, Lane already had such paintings as “ Frankie and Johnny ”, “ Addams Family Values ”, “ Mouse Hunt ”, etc.
2000s - 2010s
Nathan Lane receives the second Tony Award for starring in the musical The Producers (the first he received for The Funny Accident on the Way to the Forum). He also acted as a replacement for Richard Dreyfus in 2004, which earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Actor.
In 2005, the film " Producers " was released - a film adaptation of the musical, where Nathan played earlier. His partner in this musical, Matthew Broderick , also played in the film. For this role, Lane receives a second Golden Globe nomination [17] .
In 2006, Lane was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the development of the film industry. Her number is 6801 [17] .
After Lane appeared in several films, including Sober Head and The Nutcracker and the Rat King . In 2012, the film “ Snow White: Revenge of the Dwarfs ” was released, where the actor played one of the main roles - Brighton - a devoted servant of the Queen [18] .
