October 20, 1998 the song was released on Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too ; the single appeared on the American shelves on November 10, “To Think I Thought” became the B-side . The British release of the single did not take place until March 22, 1999. In the video for the song, young people hooligan and dance to the performance of the group in a shopping center. As on the cover of the single, Gregg Alexander appears in the video in his favorite panama . It was filmed by Evan Bernard at the New York Staten Island Mall . "You Get What You Give" led the charts of Canada and New Zealand , became the 5th in the UK .
Alexander intentionally made the last verse of the song provocative:
- Health Insurance - False Extortion
- FDA bought by large bankers,
- Fake computer hacks daily
- Cloning while they multiply.
- The pursuit of fashion from Beck and Hanson ,
- Courtney Love and Merlin Manson .
- You all are fakes, go to your mansions
- Come, we’ll kick your asses [1] .
Original text
- Health insurance ripoff lying
- FDA big bankers buying
- Fake computer crashes dining
- Cloning while they're multiplying
- Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
- Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
- You're all fakes, run to your mansions
- Come around, we'll kick your ass in
According to Alexander, he wanted to see what would cause a greater resonance: an anti-political text or a mockery of the stars of show business; as expected, the second won [2] . Marilyn Manson said that he was not offended by the promise to kick his ass, but he would not tolerate placing his name in the same sentence as Courtney Love, and therefore promised to open his skull at the meeting [3] . Beck said that when he met at the store, Alexander apologized to him, saying also that he had nothing against the musician [4] . The Hanson brothers collaborated with Alexander, and the youngest of them, Zack , called Gregg a tough but tough guy. [5]
Later, “You Get What You Give” was on the list of best songs. In 2005, Blender placed her in 440th place on the list of 500 greatest songs since your birth [6] . In 2010, Pitchfork Media named the song 106th on the list of the best tracks of the 1990s. A year later, on the VH1 television channel’s similar list, “You Get What You Give” became 11th [7] . Colleagues in the music department also celebrated the song. Edge of U2 in 2006 expressed regret that he did not write “You Get What You Give” [8] . In the same year, Ice-T at the Conan O'Brien Show , in response to a question about which non- rap songs of recent years he liked, indicated only “You Get What You Give”.
