Story
1912 year. England. The heir to the title of Earl of Grantham, who lives with his family on his Dunton family estate in Yorkshire , dies on the Titanic . The family expects that now that there are no male heirs left, the ownership and capital of the family after the death of the count as a result of the agreement signed by the dead father of the count will be transferred to his eldest daughter.
No tricks have even theoretically helped to reverse fate, and Count Robert, who gave his whole life his estate, refuses to defend the rights of young Mary, believing that everything, including the considerable capital of his wife, should go to the heir to his count’s title , the unknown son of the fourth cousin Count's brother.
In the series, along with the life of the gentlemen, the life of the servant is narrated.
The second season takes place during the First World War , starting with the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and ending with the armistice in 1918. Lord Grantham was not called up for war because of his age, but Matthew Crowley and footman William went to the front. Tom Branson strongly doubts that he wants to fight for England. And Lady Sybil, despite her aristocratic background, serves as a sister of mercy in a local hospital.
The third season tells about the first years after the war, 1920. The abbey is in jeopardy due to Earl Grantham's failed investments, Matthew Crowley married the earl's daughter, Lady Mary Crowley, and hesitates to spend the legacy of his first bride Lavinia to save the Abbey. Lady Sybil connects her fate with the chauffeur of the family, Tom Branson, but soon dies of complications in the birth of her daughter. Matthew and Mary are also waiting for the birth of a child - the long-awaited heir, a son, is born. However, returning from the hospital, the happy Matthew does not notice the danger on the road - and dies in a car accident ...
The fourth season is dedicated to rebuilding the family after the death of Matthew Crowley and Lady Sybil. Mary and Tom come together and begin to do housework. Lady Edith discovers that she is pregnant from her missing lover. To save her honor and the honor of the family, she resorted to the help of an aunt, Lady Rosamund, and a granny, the Dowager Countess. Bates is accused of killing his ex-wife.
