Biography

Born in 1820 or 1821. He served in the Minsk Infantry Regiment .

By the opening of the Crimean War he was a captain and commanded a company in the Minsk regiment. From the very beginning of the Sevastopol defense, Zhukovsky was in the garrison of the city.

On October 24, 1854, at the head of the 3rd battalion of the regiment, he made a sortie from the 6th bastion to French positions and, during the attack, captured the left flank of the enemy battery; during a battle on a battery, he received a bullet wound in his forearm.

On October 31, 1854, while repelling an assault, he was seriously wounded in the calf of his left leg. He was evacuated to the North side, and then transported to the Simferopol military land hospital. Despite all the efforts of the doctors, he died in the hospital on November 15. He was buried in Simferopol at the Old City Christian Cemetery.

Since the documents about Zhukovsky’s death arrived in St. Petersburg belatedly, by the Highest Order of December 15, 1854, he was still formally listed as living, for the difference in the sortie he was awarded the Order of St. George 4th degree (No. 9551 according to the cavalier list of Grigorovich - Stepanov). Thus, Zhukovsky became the first holder of the Order of St. George, awarded this order posthumously.
