Vessel History
The laying of the seventh and penultimate vessel of the Fantasy class under serial number 491 took place in 1997 at the Kvaerner Masa Yards AB shipyard in Finland. In mid-March 1988 the ship was handed over to the shipping company and was originally called Elation . The godmother of the ship was Shari Arison (Shari Arison), daughter of the founder of the shipping company Ted Arison (Ted Arison). Elation set off on its first voyage on March 20, 1998, and became the company's first ship, whose home port was one of the cities on the West Coast of the United States. The ship went on cruises from Los Angeles along the Mexican coast. After Carnival Elation was transferred to San Diego, in May 2010 he left for the Caribbean from the home port of Mobile in the southern United States in Alabama . In 2009, the vessel was thoroughly modernized as part of the Evolution of Fun program.
Incidents
- At the end of October 2002, the cruise was canceled due to problems with the drive. The ship was sent to dry dock to find out the reasons.
- During a cruise on the Caribbean Sea in June 2005, the ship lost control for one hour due to the failure of the car. [2]
Machine and drive
Carnival Elation has a diesel-electric installation that supplies the entire ship with electricity. In contrast to the previously built “Fantasy” class vessels, two identical engine rooms of the Wärtsilä type 12V38 are installed in two separate rooms of the engine room, driving synchronous alternators , which give an electric power of 11,000 kVA, respectively, to the on-board high-voltage network (3- x phase alternating current, 6600 V, 60 Hz). [3] Carnival Elation was the first ship in the world to provide propeller-driven columns instead of traditional propellers and rudders. Previously, such a system was used exclusively on special vessels, such as port tugs.
The Carnival Elation drive was developed by ABB and Kvaerner Masa Yards AB . The system consists of two ABB Azipod - type rotary helm columns mounted in the stern, rotating 360 °. In each column there is a 3-phase synchronous motor transmitting power of 14 MW (approx. 19.040 hp) directly to the forward-facing 4-blade fixed propeller (traction screw) directed forward.
Along with a particularly quiet ride and a low level of vibration on board, this type of drive gives higher efficiency and significantly increases maneuverability. For example, a turn at full speed compared to conventional class ships of the Fantasy class was reduced by about 30%.
On board
Carnival Elation was designed by ship architect Joseph Farkus under the motto “Composers and Compositions”. The main features of the decks correspond in general to the features of the decks of "Fantasy" class vessels. The vessel accommodates 2,052 passengers in 1,026 cabins of various categories, including 54 suites, and out of 564 cabins sea views are available. In contrast to the more modern design ships, the facilities at Carnival Elation are larger. Restaurants and entertainment rooms are located in flat superstructures. Only 26 cabins with a balcony and eight interior cabins are located on the “deck-veranda”. The atrium passes through six floors and is equipped with two panoramic elevators and ends with a glass dome at the height of the sun deck. The main restaurants are located in the middle of the ship and at the stern of the Atlantic deck. Between them is the kitchen. The main theater (“The Mikado”) in the bow of the vessel has Japanese-style decoration and offers two levels of seats for 1,200 spectators. At the rear of the promenade deck is the Cole Porter Club with a stage. In addition, the ship has bars, cafes, a library, as well as a gaming casino. The 11.000 m² sports deck accommodates a fitness studio, saunas and massage rooms. After modernization, the “Serenity” zone was designated - “only for adults”.
