Biography

Nikolai Arseniev was born on November 2, 1922 in the village of Rostovishchi (now the Bezhetsky district of the Tver region ) in a peasant family [1] .

In 1941, Arseniev was drafted into the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1942 he graduated from the infantry school . Since January 1, 1943 on the fronts of World War II. On February 16, 1943, Arseniev was appointed deputy battalion commander of the 185th Rifle Guards Regiment of the 60th Guards Rifle Division for combatant units. On August 26, 1943, Arseniev was wounded and evacuated to the hospital . After the cure, he returned to the front, participated in crossing the Dnieper in the Zaporozhye region [1] .

At the end of October 1943, Captain Arsenyev, along with a group of less than 30 fighters, landed on the island of Khortitsa on the Dnieper River in the Zaporozhye region, and then participated in battles for the island for three days, expanding the bridgehead to 250 meters. Arsenyev participated in repelling more than fifteen German counterattacks, personally went on the attack four times [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 19, 1944, for captain Arsenyev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 3642 [1] .

After the war, Arsenyev continued to serve in the Soviet armed forces. In 1948 he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy , and in 1956 - from the Higher Academic Courses, served in the Baltic Military District . Since March 1958, he commanded the 50th Guards Motor Rifle Division in Brest (military unit No. 22156) [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner , the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of the Red Star , and medals [1] .

On April 7, 1962, Major General Arseniev was arrested. During the investigation, it was found that in 1958-1961 Arseniev abused his official position, plundered state property, and speculated in building materials. A series of episodes were established, including the theft of the GAZ-51 car’s cabin in May 1958, the theft of 89 cubic meters of forest in an organized group in September 1959, and the theft of thousands of sheets of three-wave slate from a cement-slate plant in Krichev in March 1960 , speculation in cement purchased with government money in 1959-1960, as well as the theft of two piglets. Arseniev partially admitted guilt in the commission of crimes. The trial took place on July 17-31, 1962 in Brest and was closed. Together with Arsenyev, they were in the dock: the head of the local motorcade Okunev and the driver Doronin, with whom Arsenyev was stealing the forest, and teacher Glinka, together with whom the theft of slate was stolen. On July 31, 1962, the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced Nikolai Arsenyev to 8 years in prison with confiscation of property [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 24, 1962, Arseniev was deprived of the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and all titles and awards [1] .

Arsenyev repeatedly wrote petitions to the Supreme Court of the USSR, asking for leniency. Writer Sergei Smirnov, the winner of the Lenin Prize, petitioned for the pardon of the convicted general. In 1965, Arsenyev was prematurely released from the colony and sent to the "chemistry", to the construction of the national economy in Nizhnevartovsk [1] .

October 22, 1975 Arseniev died under unclear circumstances [1] . According to some reports, he was killed by criminals a few months before his release [2] . He was buried in the city of Bezhetsk, Tver Region [1] .
