History and Activities
The library was created by order of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR in 1960. It is part of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus . The mission of the Library is to provide free access to international and national information resources on agro-industrial complex (AIC) .
BelSSHB is the national information center of the agro-industrial complex, the leading scientific industry library, the main national repository of industry information resources, the National Center for the United Nations International Agriculture and Food Information System FAO AGRIS, the center for national interlibrary loan and the center for delivering documents from foreign information centers of the International Network of National Agricultural FAO AGLINET libraries, the FAO document depository library in elarusi, the focal point of information resources in the agricultural sector in Belarus.
The library is the organizer of free access to international and national information resources on agricultural issues without restrictions on departmental affiliation and social status of information consumers.
The information collected by the library is one of the most important strategic resources for the development of the economy, science, technology, manufacturing, business, education, culture and spirituality. The library directs its activities to providing information to the state agribusiness, to integrating national agricultural information into the global information space and to preserving and using the documentary memory of Belarus in the field of agribusiness.

Library Information Resources Available to Everyone
The library has collected the most representative collection of literature in Belarus on agriculture and forestry, food, food industry, natural resources, and environmental protection. The library stores - over 0.5 million documents: monographs and collections, abstracts of dissertations, periodicals and continuing publications, information materials in Russian, Belarusian, English and other languages. The library completes a collection of documents from hundreds of sources in Belarus and abroad. Access to information and technology are implemented using the automated library system IRBIS. The communicative format is UNIMARC. Access to the library's collection is provided from the BelAL Electronic Catalog (from 1992 and selectively until 1992) and the Image Catalog (until 1992).
In the computers of the library, more than 40 bibliographic, abstract, factographic, full-text and expert databases (DBs) are maintained and updated, which contain over 20 million records and millions of pages of full texts.
External relations of the library are aimed at integration with national, foreign and international information centers
The BelSSHB in its activities is closely connected with all major libraries of Belarus on the mutual use of national information resources, including the IBA and the use of databases. The library is one of the founders of the Belarusian Library Association. The library develops direct links with national agricultural libraries and information centers in Central and Western Europe and America, buying and exchanging literature and databases. The strongest ties have been established with the National Agricultural Library of the United States and the Central Agricultural Library of Russia, where a control copy of agricultural literature published in Belarus is transferred.
BelSSHB is the National Center for the FAO Publications International Information System (AGRIS). The library supplies AGRIS via the Internet with information about Belarusian agricultural literature in English for inclusion in the AGRIS database.
BelSSHB regularly supplies the FAO International Information System with information from national state statistics. Being a member of the FAO AGLINET International Network of National Agricultural Libraries, BelSSHB uses the delivery of documents from many national agricultural libraries in the world. More than 200 foreign organizations exchange literature with the BelSSHB.
BelSHB organizes navigation in the world’s Web resources and the integration of national Web resources on the Internet by supporting the national agro WWW navigator, supports the AgroWeb Belarus portal.
BelSKHB is a member of the International Association of Agricultural Information Specialists (IAALD) and is a member of the International Association of Users and Developers of Electronic Libraries and New Information Technologies (ELNIT). BelSHB is a member of the round table "USA / Central and Eastern European Agricultural Libraries Roundtable".

The library staff consists of qualified specialists in the field of information communications. 50 professional librarians provide information services and technology. All of them have library, agricultural, technical or linguistic education. The staff of the Library regards the information resources of BelSKhB as national treasures and seeks their growth and increase of accessibility.
