The upgraded sample is designated GSh-6-23M (index 9-A-768 ).
Development of a six-barrel 23-mm gun AO-19 (TKB-613) of the Tula Instrument Design Bureau . The work was headed by Vasily Gryazev . General management was provided by Arkady Shipunov . The general scheme of the gun is similar to AO-18, but instead of a pneumatic starter, a cassette pyro- starter with ten squibs was used . Serial production was organized in 1972 . Adopted in 1974 under the designation GSh-6-23 (9-A-620).
The gun is designed to destroy both ground and air targets (including cruise missiles ). It is installed on MiG-31 and Su-24 aircraft . It has a recoil of 5 tons in recoil and 3.5 tons in recoil.
The GSh-6-23 gun is made according to a multi-barrel automation scheme with a rotating barrel unit. Trunks with shutters are assembled in a single unit and rotate in a fixed casing together with the central star. The shutters sliding in the longitudinal directions of the central star perform a reciprocating motion. For one revolution of the barrel block, each of the bolts performs reloading, and shots are fired from the barrels sequentially. Block trunks and related mechanisms make continuous movement throughout the queue. Acceleration of the barrel block is carried out by a gas piston type pyro-starter using standard PPL squibs. The operation of the gun automation is based on the use of the energy of powder gases discharged from the barrels through the gas vents to the gas engine. Fire control - remote from a constant current source of voltage 27 V.
For firing from the GSh-6-23M cannon, 23-mm shells with high-explosive incendiary shells and armor-piercing incendiary-tracer warheads (projectile weight 200 g) are used. The projectile 23 × 115 mm (projectile type AM-23) is similar to the GSh-23 cannon.
