London 1876 - a chess tournament of leading London masters, which was held at the Simpsons Sofa coffee house from March 27 to April 29, 1876. The participants played two games with each other, and, unlike modern two-round tournaments, where one round is completely held first, and then the second, both parties were played in a row [1] .
The prize pool was 50 pounds : the first prize - 25, the second - 15, and the third - 10 pounds [1] .
8 chess players started at the start [1] . However, after the second round, due to illness, the tournament left W. Martin , and after the third - J. Whisker . According to the regulations, their results were canceled [2] .
The first place, having lost only one game, was taken by J. Blackburn , thus restoring his reputation after the recent defeat in the match with Steinitz (in February – March of the same year) [2] .

The second game of Blackburn with McDonnell was not played, since its result could no longer affect the distribution of seats [2] . In the book “Chess: Encyclopedic Dictionary”, the results are given taking into account all the games played (Blackburn - 10 out of 11, Zuckertort - 9) [3] .
