Jozef Czech ( Polish: Józef Czech ; * December 11, 1762 , Krakow - † 1810 , Kremenets , (now the Ternopil region of Ukraine ) - Polish mathematician , philosopher , teacher and translator , first director of the Higher Volyn Gymnasium ( Volyn Lyceum ).

Biography

He studied at the Jagiellonian University . After his graduation, he worked as a teacher in the schools of Plock and Lublin . After the reforms of the education system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , carried out by the eduction committee, he was a geometry teacher in Krakow Kolegium Nowodworskie .

Invited to work at the Cracow Academy , in 1797 Professor Jozef Cech became dean of the Department of Mathematics. From here, in 1805 he was invited to work in the created Higher Volyn Gymnasium (lyceum) in Kremenets, where he became its first director. He worked at this post until his death in 1810 .

The main goal of Yu. Chekh was to create textbooks of mathematics accessible for academic youth. To this end, he translated into Polish the summit of ancient geometry and ancient mathematics - the work of Euclid's "Beginnings" . The first 8 books of the Beginnings were published by him in 1807 , and then they appeared in the second edition after the death of Cech in 1817 .

In 1807 he wrote the textbook “A Short Course in Arithmetic with Tables ...” (pol. “Krótki wykład arytmetyki z tablicami, przykłady rachunkowe zawierającemi, napisany dla młodzi akademickiej” ), which passed 5 reprints.

The outstanding mathematician J. Cech worked closely with the rector of the University of Vilnius , mathematician Jan Snyadetsky .
