Vinegar Hill (Brooklyn)

Vinegar Hill ( English Vinegar Hill , literally: A hill covered with berry trees , the name comes from the hill of the same name in Ireland, Ir. Fiodh na gCaor , translated as "trees with berries") - an area in northwestern Brooklyn , New York , USA - East River embankment between the DUMBO area and the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard . The area is bounded by Front Street and Bridge Street and includes six blocks. Until the 1950s, Vinegar Hill area was much larger, however, due to the construction of the Federal Route 278 highway, part of the district was cut off and began to exist as a separate RAMBO district.

Vinegar Hill

Initially, the Irish settled mainly on this territory, who named the area in honor of the Battle of Vinegar Hill during the Irish uprising of 1798. Vinegar Hill retained the status of an Irish region until the end of the 19th century.

Most of the buildings in Vinegar Hill are Neogrec-style, and many streets, including the East River Promenade, are paved with cobblestones . Vinegar Hill belongs to the historic districts of New York [1] [2] .

Vinegar Hill serves the 84th Police Station. [3] The area is home to one of one of the largest US energy companies , Consolidated Edison . At the corner of Evans and Little streets is the mansion of Commodore US Navy Matthew Perry [4] .
