The siege of Syracuse by the army of the Roman Republic took place from 214 to 212 BC. e. As a result, the Hellenistic city of Great Greece of Syracuse , located on the eastern coast of the island of Sicily , was captured by the Romans. The Roman army stormed the city after a long siege that gave it control over the entire island. During the siege, Syracuse was protected by weapons invented by Archimedes . This inventor and mathematician was killed after a siege by a Roman soldier who violated the order of the commander, consul Mark Claudius Marcellus , to leave Archimedes alive [1] . The siege of Syracuse was part of the Second Punic War .
