The siege of Kimberley ( English the siege of Kimberley ) took place during the Boer War in Kimberley (South Africa) , Cape Colony (Now - South Africa). An army of Boers from the Orange Republic and Transvaal Republic besieged a city famous for its diamond mines. The Boers tried to take this city as soon as possible, immediately after the declaration of war, in October 1899 . The city was poorly prepared for defense, but its defenders were able to erect fortifications in time, which allowed them to hold on.
