Story
Anya begins her studies at the University of Redmond with Gilbert, Charlie Sloane and Prisla Grant. Since she learned a lot at home, studying seems easy to her, so she has a lot of free time. She has a new girlfriend - rich frivolous beauty Phil Gordon, thanks to which Anya and Prisilla play a significant role in Redmond’s social life. Later, another good friend of Ani from the teacher's seminary, Stella Maynard, appears at the university; and in the second year, the girlfriends are shooting for the remaining three years of study the charming old Patti House. There they are all (even Phil spoiled) with a little help from Jamesina, Stella's aunt, learning to farm.
Meanwhile, several people are in love with Anya, now a beautiful young lady. The first offer she makes in Avonley is a timid, smiling Billy, Jane Andrews brother - however, she does not personally, because of the incredible timidity, but through her sister’s mediation. An amazed Anya refuses, but most of all in this story she is saddened by the unromanticism of the whole situation. The second sentence is hardly the more romantic way Charlie Sloan makes, who takes offense at her for a long time after her refusal. Finally, Anya soon decides to confess her love and Gilbert, but she is also rejected: Anya still dreams of her mysterious melancholic “beautiful prince” and considers Gilbert to be just a friend. However, after Gilbert’s refusal, Ani has a vague feeling that she made a mistake.
After completing her studies in the second year, Anya is afraid that she will not have enough money for the next two years in Redmond. But in the summer, Josephine Barry, great-aunt of Diana Barry, who loved Anya very much, dies, and leaves Anya a thousand dollars . Therefore, Anya may not interrupt her studies, and in the fall she still goes back to the university.
In the third year, Anya finally meets the melancholic “beautiful prince” - Roy Gardner, a wealthy student who lived in Europe for two years and therefore is still not familiar with her. Roy begins to care for her, and soon the whole of Redmond is talking about their intended wedding. And Gilbert suddenly becomes a devoted fan of one of the university beauties - Christine Stewart, which for some reason offends Anya.
Almost all Anina girlfriends find their love: Diana in Avonley marries her Fred, Phil Gordon, to everyone's amazement, falls in love with the seminary student of the seminary, Jane Andrews is engaged to a millionaire from Winnipeg . One Anya has not yet decided anything with marriage. But unexpectedly for herself, she refuses Roy when he makes her an offer - she feels that he is actually a rather boring young man, and even without a sense of humor.
Anya after graduating from university, disillusioned with love and romance in general, goes for two weeks to visit Stephen and Lavender Irving. When she returns to Avonley, she learns that Gilbert is dangerously sick with typhus . Anya realizes that she has always loved only Gilbert, and in horror goes to the Blythe to find out about the state of the young man. Fortunately, she is informed that he has gone on the mend. Soon after his recovery, Gilbert again makes an offer to Anya, explaining to her that he didn’t like Christina at all, and this time Anya answers “yes”.
Main characters
- Anya Shirley , an ambitious, dreamy student, writes literary sketches and short stories, some of which are accepted by the editorial board. In the novel her long-time desire to become a bachelor of liberal arts was fulfilled. She sincerely loved Gilbert Blythe, but to the last did not admit to herself and others in this.
- Gilbert Blythe , faithful friend of Ani, a student at the medical department. By his own admission, in love with Anya since he was fourteen. Recovers from typhus at the end of the novel, receiving a letter from Phil Gordon with the news that Anya refused to Roy Gardner.
- Roy Gardner , a rich student of Redmond, who can make romantic compliments and write quite decent (in Ani's expression) sonnets, but completely devoid of a sense of humor. I fell in love with Anya and took care of her for two years until I received a refusal from her.

- Stella Maynard , Ani's friend, who came to Redmond a year later.
