History
Murena replaced the Matra Bagheera model, created as a result of the collaboration of Matra and Simca and was largely based on its design. Murena, which received the M551 index during development, had a number of significant changes. The car still had a frame structure with fiberglass and polyester body panels. However, unlike Bagheera, its frame was completely galvanized to prevent corrosion. [3] In fact, the Murena was the first car with fully galvanized parts throughout the chassis. In combination with composite panels, the machine had significant rust protection with the exception of the rear suspension arms. [four]
Murena inherited from its predecessor the central location of the engine, which was located behind the passenger seats and the body type - streamlined 3-door hatchback . The all-new, re-designed body had very good aerodynamic performance for its time. [3] [5] A unique feature of the car was a three-seater row of seats - the middle seat folded, forming an armrest . [four]
The base engine was a 2.2 liter engine manufactured by Chrysler France , also mounted on the Talbot Tagora executive sedan. [5] This engine could be equipped with the so-called “ S-kit ” kit , which increased power to 142 liters. from. Initially, it was installed by local dealers, but later it could be ordered directly from the factory. [3]
Matra Murena was discontinued in 1983 when the Romorantin plant switched to the Renault Espace minivan.
