Biography
At first, Koch studied medicine in Jena , but mainly studied botany, and in 1834 he became a privat-docent in botany in Jena.
In 1836 , Koch took a trip to the East, visited the Caucasus , Mingrelia to Batumi , the northern part of Armenia , the Persian Plateau and Ararat . The main purpose of this journey was to determine the homeland of fruit trees. Koch returned from this journey in 1838 through St. Petersburg with rich collections; he published the results of the journey in the essay: “Reise durch Russland nach dem Kaukas. Isthmus ” (2 volumes, Stuttgart , 1842 - 43 ).
In 1843 , Koch, with the assistance of Frederick William IV and the Berlin Academy of Sciences, made a second trip to the East. He visited the Pontic Plateau , the area around Ardagan and Erzurum and the eastern part of the region adjacent to the Euphrates . The description of this journey amounted to 3 volumes of the work: “Wanderungen durch dem Orient” ( Weimar , 1846–47 ). After moving to Berlin in 1847 , Koch was appointed extraordinary professor of dendrology at the university, in 1878 he was appointed director of the Berlin Botanical Garden .

His main work is considered "Dendrologie" (3 volumes, Erlangen , 1869 - 1872 );
in addition, he published the following essays:
- "Das natürliche System des Pflanzenreichs nachgewiesen in der Flora von Jena" ( 1839 ),
- “Beiträge zu einer Flora des Orientes” ( Berlin , 1848 - 1851 ),
- "Hortus dendrologicus" ( 1853 ),
- Die botanischen Gärten ( Berlin , 1860 ),
- “Die deutschen Obstgehölze” ( Stuttgart , 1876 ).
From 1857 to 1872 , Koch published the magazine: “Wochenschrift für Gärtnerei und Pflanzenkunde” .
