Yana Gerekova began biathlon in 2000. In 2002, she first participated in the World Junior Championships in Italy, where she took 12th place in the individual race . The following year in Poland she took fourth place in the individual race. In 2004, at the championship in France, she took good places in all three races and entered the top ten in the overall ranking. That year, at the European Junior Championships in Minsk, her best result was 7th place. In 2005, at the European Junior Championships in Novosibirsk, Yana Gerekova took 5th place in the relay.

Starting from the 2005/06 season, she has been participating in competitions of a higher level. She made her debut at the IBU Cup in Osrblie . Yana Gerekova took part in the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 , where she took 59th place in the individual race. At the World Championships in Pokljuka, she took 13th place in the mixed relay.

Yana Gerekova took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Her best result was 40th in the sprint and pursuit. In the relay race she took 13th place. And she also took part in the Sochi Olympic Games and took 42nd position in the sprint, and 34th position in the pursuit. 49th place in the individual race prevented her from taking the medal. She did not take part in the mass start, but she took part in the relay, but her team left the race. In the mixed relay, her team took 6th position.
