Chamber of fire

The Fiery Chamber ( Fr. Chambre ardente ) is the name of several extraordinary judicial bodies under the Old Order in France .

The Tribunal for Heretics

An element of the French Counter-Reformation was the special judiciary established by the French kings to prosecute the Huguenots - Calvinists .

The Fire Chamber first appeared under Francis I in 1535 .

In 1547, Henry II of Valois established an extraordinary tribunal for the trial of heretics , the Fiery Chamber, at the Paris Parliament . Over the 3 years of operation, the chamber condemned about 600 Huguenots, many of them - for burning .

In 1559, Francis II established the chambers of fire at all French parliaments , Paris and provincial. These chambers were required to monitor the execution of heretic edicts .

Poison Tribunal

In 1680, Louis XIV established a poisoning tribunal - the Fiery Chamber, also known as the "Chambers of the Arsenal" ( Fr. Chambre de l'Arsenal , at the venue of the meeting - Arsenal). The official reason for the institution was the frequent cases of homicide through poisoning (for example, the famous case of the Marquise de Brenvilliers , 1676 ).

The chamber condemned the burning poisoner, Catherine Monvoisin ( French: Catherine Monvoisin ; aka Catherine la Voisin, French la Voisin ) for burning .
