Forest road is a communication route intended for hauling timber from logging sites to the place of storage or processing , as well as transportation of goods within the area of activity of the logging company .
By type of rolling stock, forest roads are divided into:
- rail ;
- automobile ;
- tractor;
- horse
Forest roads are built according to a simplified scheme: trees on the road are cut down, stumps are uprooted , the ground surface is leveled with a bulldozer . If necessary, the road is planned grader . In some cases, the path is lined with tree trunks , and from above it is covered with soil, sand, gravel, etc.
After the end of logging, the road can no longer be used for economic purposes or is used randomly - mushroom pickers, hunters, fishermen, taiga gift collectors. Unused road overgrown in a few years.
In the 70s. In the twentieth century , 70–75% of harvested wood in the USSR was exported by road, 20–25% by rail, and about 5% by other types of roads (mainly by tractor) [1] .
Often for the removal of forests from inaccessible areas use winter roads .
