Of the clubs that participated in the previous season , only Khonki’s participation was questionable due to funding problems [1] . In September, Honka declared bankrupt and another Finnish club, Torpan Poyat , was invited to qualify for it [2] . Among the applicants for additional places were called Astana [3] , Nymburk , Lokomotiv-Kuban , Spartak [4] and Budivelnik [5] .
At the end of July 2011, a meeting of the League Council was held in Riga , at which the format of the tournament and the composition of its participants were finally approved. In the regular season 18 clubs took part, which held a two-round tournament. 16 participants of this tournament became known in advance. The remaining two places were to play six more clubs in the qualifying tournament. The newcomers to the tournament were the Russian Yenisei and Krasnye Krylia , the Ukrainian Dnieper , the Lithuanian Siauliai , the Polish Anvil and the Finnish Torpan Poyat [6] .

Competition Format
The regular season started on September 29, 2011 and ended on March 18, 2012. 18 participating teams, divided into two groups, held a 2-round tournament. According to the results of the regular season, the two winners of the groups went directly to the “Final Four”, and the teams that took 2-4 places will play in the playoffs in April. First, in the 1/8 finals, the third and fourth teams from the groups will meet, and then, in the 1/4 finals, the winners of these pairs will compete with the teams that become second in their groups. Both rounds of the playoffs will go to two wins. The “Final Four” of the third in the history of the VTB United League Championship is scheduled for May 2-3, 2012.
