Bishop Arseniy (in the world Mark Balaban ; d. In the beginning of 1569 ) - Bishop of the Western Russian Metropolitanate subordinate to the Patriarchate of Constantinople , Bishop of Lviv and Kamenetz-Podolsky , Vicar of the Kiev Metropolitan .
Biography
He came from an ancient and noble noble family [1] .
On December 13, 1548, Balaban was appointed successor to Bishop Makarios (Tuchapsky) and guardian of the Unevsky monastery. Despite the opposition of the Lviv Catholic Archbishop, in 1549 Balaban, having taken tonsure with the name Arseny, took the chair.
In connection with the difficult financial situation of the Lviv diocese, Bishop Arseniy tried to subjugate the Unuev and Onufrievsky monasteries, which were under the tutelage of the Lviv fraternity and considered metropolitan, but acted so rudely and unceremoniously that on November 20, 1549, King Sigismund II Augustus deprived him of patronage in relation to the monasteries and ordered to compensate for the damage.
In the trial of the right to custody of monasteries, which then began, during which armed servants and relatives of the bishop attacked the Unuevskaya and Onufrievsky cloisters, Arseniy did not obey the decision of the Kiev Metropolitan Makarius, which was negative for him, and summoned him to the royal court in 1555, but the metropolitan died earlier the appointed court date.
Having several sons and wishing that one of them was his successor in the department, Bishop Arseniy in 1566, expressing his intention to leave her, asked Sigismund Augustus for a letter of honor to the Lviv diocese for his son Gregory . Gregory immediately took control of her, not accepting the dignity, and controlled under the direction of his father for more than three years, until his death.
