Geography
The region is located in the southeastern part of the state, and covers 14 905 km², which is 20% of the state.
Population
According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, in 2006 there were 756,800 people living in the Tawau region, representing approximately 26% of the population of Sabah.

The Tawau region is divided into four districts :
- Kunak
- Lahad Datu
- Semporna
- Tawau
Transport
The main port and airfield are located in the city of Tawau - the third largest port in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan .
