Geography
The region is located in the central and northeastern parts of the state, and covers 28,205 km², which is 38.3% of the state.
Population
According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, in 2006, 676,000 people lived in the Sandakan region, representing approximately 19.4% of the population of Sabah.

The Sandakan region is divided into four districts :
- Beluran
- Kinabatangan
- Sandakan
- Tongod
Transport
The main port and airfield are in Sandakan, the second largest port in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu .
