General Information

The first sound chamber in Russia is located in the “Tower of silence” ( St. Petersburg ), designed by academician Ivan Petrovich Pavlov in 1913-1917. [1] .

The sound chamber as a training method is used in the preparation of astronauts who, in conditions of sensory deprivation , i.e. lack of sound and light stimuli - get used to isolation from the outside world.

At the initial stage of research in the USSR, using a similar technique, the astronauts were in a sound chamber in conditions of reduced pressure and in an atmosphere consisting of pure oxygen , but after the death of cosmonaut Valentin Bondarenko in the sound chamber of March 23, 1961 , the atmosphere was normalized.

The reaction to isolating a person from external stimuli is determined visually or using special equipment.
