History
Pont-à-Marc is located in a strategically important place in the middle of the road from Lille to Douai . Initially, there was a wooded and marshy area through which the small river Mark flowed, to which the city owes its name.
Like many other settlements in these places, the city was repeatedly plundered and burned by the armies of various countries passing through it. In 1793, the Austrian troops besieging Lille settled in Pont-a-Marc and carried out many executions.
In September 1944, German troops during the retreat turned Pont-a-Marc into a powerful fortified area; the allies took a lot of effort and sacrifice to take the city.
