Epistolary style - a style of speech used when writing letters in private correspondence. L. V. Shcherba belonged to the forms of the business language, in contrast to the forms of fiction [1] . This style can be used not only for a utilitarian purpose, but also as a literary device in different genres of prose (the epistolary novel “ Poor People ” by F. Dostoevsky , the story “ Vanka ” by A. Chekhov ), poetry (the epistle “On the Use of Glass” by M. Lomonosov ) and journalism (“Messages” by I. Vichensky , “Letters from the Farm” by P. Kulish ). Some philologists do not consider the epistolary style to be a single autonomous style, noting that various genres and linguistic means of the epistolary style are associated either with colloquial speech (in private correspondence), or with business speech (in official correspondence), or with journalistic speech (open letter), or with an artistic speech ("epistolary novel") [2] .
The specific features of the epistolary style may depend on the social status of the correspondents and the purpose of the correspondence, giving rise to particular varieties of style. In the past, sets of such rules were recorded in special writing guidelines - “ scribes ” [1] .
Key Features
- the presence of a specific composition
- respectful beginning
- the head part, which reveals the contents of the letter
- ending where the written is summed up
- sometimes postscript ( lat. P.S. - an addendum to the finished letter after the signature).
The main language means are a combination of elements of artistic, journalistic and conversational styles. The modern epistolary style has become more concise (telegraphic), the volume of previously obligatory introductory addresses and final formations of politeness has decreased.
