The order for the construction of the submarine was given on August 25, 1941 . The boat was laid down on July 6, 1942 at the Flensburger Schiffsbau shipyard , Flensburg , under building number 490, launched on June 11, 1943 . The boat went into service on August 27, 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Ulrich Hammer.
