Officially, in Brunei there are no settlements with the status of "city". The suburban areas in Brunei Darussalama are divided into kampongs or villages. They can be governed either by a village council chaired by a headman (Ketua Kampong) or by a municipal council (Lembaga Bandaran). Those governed by the municipal council are called cities (β€œtown”).

There are three municipal councils in Brunei that govern the cities of Petya:

  • Bandar Seri Begawan (population β‰ˆ 181 500 people, municipal council Bandar Seri Begawan)
  • Kuala Belait (population β‰ˆ 38,000 people, Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Council)
  • Seria (population β‰ˆ 35,400 people, municipal council Series)
  • Jerudong (population β‰ˆ 30,000 people, municipal council Series)
  • Pecan Tutong (population β‰ˆ 27 500 people, Tutong Municipal Council)
