The order for the construction of the submarine was given on August 15, 1940 . The boat was laid down on January 3, 1941 at the Nordseeeverke shipyard in Emden under building number 207, launched on October 15, 1941 . The boat went into operation on December 17, 1941 under the command of Captain-Lieutenant Hans-Hermann Pelkner.
