The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires ( Latin: Archidioecesis Bonaërensis ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in the city of Buenos Aires , the capital of Argentina . The metropolitanate of Buenos Aires includes the dioceses of Avellaneda-Lanus , Gregorio de Laferrere , Quilmes , Lomas de Zamora , Merlot Moreno , Moron , San Isidro , San Martin , San Miguel and San Justo . The archdiocese includes the island of Martin Garcia and the city of Buenos Aires . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires is the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity . Since March 28, 2013, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires has been Cardinal Mario Aurelio Poli .

History
On April 6, 1620, the Holy See established a diocese in Buenos Aires, separating it from the diocese of Paraguay (today - the Archdiocese of Asuncion ). Initially, it was the suffragan of the Archdiocese of La Plata o Sharkas (today - the Archdiocese of Sucre ).
In 1830 and June 13, 1859 ceded part of its territory in favor of the establishment, respectively, of the Apostolic Vicariate of Montevideo and the diocese of Parana (today - Parana ).
On March 5, 1865, he was elevated to the rank of Metropolis by the bull Immutabili of Pope Pius IX .
February 15, 1897 and April 20, 1934 transferred part of its territory in favor of the establishment of the Diocese of La Plata (today - the Archdiocese ) and Viedma).
On January 29, 1936, Pope Pius XI granted the archbishops of Buenos Aires the title of Primate of Argentina .
