Creation History

Before the release of this song, Harrison was twice credited with participating in the writing of songs for The Beatles, however, both times it was about early compositions that were officially released only in Anthology 1 in 1995: In Spite of All the Danger (in mostly written by McCartney, Harrison is mentioned only for his guitar solo) and “ Cry for a Shadow ” (instrumental composition, conceived as a parody of the style of the band The Shadows ). Nevertheless, the song “Don't Bother Me” is considered the first independent song by Harrison both by critics and the author himself.

Harrison composed this song during his illness in Bournemouth , where the Beatles performed in the summer of 1963 [2] . Neither Harrison himself, nor any of the other members of the group ever highly rated this song. According to Harrison himself,

It was a pretty lousy song. [...] But at least she showed me that all I had to do was just keep writing, and maybe in the future I could write something good.

Original text
It was a fairly crappy song. [...] At least it showed me that all I needed to do was keep on writing and then maybe eventually I would write something good.
- [3]

The gloomy general mood of the song and the bleak text (“So go away, leave me alone, do not bother me”) were very atypical for the Beatles of that time, but later became quite familiar to the songs of Harrison himself. The song sounds mostly in minor and is characterized by a rather “dense” sound due to double-recorded and mixed vocals, guitar parts recorded using the reverb effect, and intense drums.

Record and release a song

The group recorded the song in two sessions, which took place on September 11 and 12, 1963 at the Abby Road studio [1] .

In the recording participated: [2]

  • George Harrison - double-recorded and mixed vocals, solo guitar
  • John Lennon - rhythm guitar, tambourine
  • Paul McCartney - bass, clave
  • Ringo Starr - drums, bongos

The song was released on the second album of With The Beatles on November 22, 1963 . Later, the song was also included in Meet The Beatles' second American album ! released January 20, 1964.

The fate of the song

  • “Don't Bother Me” sounds in the movie “ Hard Day 's Evening ” in the scene where the band members dance in a nightclub.
  • British singer Gregory Phillips recorded a cover version of this song released by his third single. Despite the fact that this single was not popular, it is notable for being the first cover version of any of George Harrison’s songs [4] .
