Biography
In 1880 he graduated from the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary in the first category [5] and in 1884 - from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy with a degree of candidate of theology [6] .
Since 1884 he served in Nizhny Novgorod , for a year as a teacher at the Lyskovsky Theological College [3] .
July 22, 1885 took the rank of deacon, and on August 1 - the rank of priest. For thirty years he was the rector of the Alexander Nevsky Church at the Zemstvo almshouse, the law teacher of the diocesan women's school (from 1886 to 1895) and from 1890 to 1895 in the 2nd city St. George's College [1] .
May 9, 1908 was elevated to the rank of Archpriest [3] .
On March 8/21, 1920, in the Church of the Savior of Nizhny Novgorod, he was consecrated bishop of Lukoyanovsky, vicar of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese [3] .
In 1922, active pastors and laymen of the city of Lukoyanov , led by Bishop Lukoyanovsky Polycarp, were arrested on charges of anti-Soviet agitation, opposing the seizure of church values, and religious fanaticism [7] for advocating for the rights of believers.
In 1923, he supported the archbishop Evdokim (Meshchersky) , who had evaded updating, but on August 25 ( September 7 ), 1923 , Patriarch Tikhon accepted him in communion with the Church [8] .
Since November 1923 - Bishop of Ardatovsky , Vicar of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese [3] .
July 30, 1928 appointed bishop of Vetluzhsky , vicar of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese . Arrived in Vetluga on September 9 and served the first all-night service on September 11 - The Beheading of the Head of John the Baptist [1] .
Bishop Polycarpus did not stay at the Vetluzhsky Chair for long. In February 1929, his request was granted to dismiss retirement from residence in the city of Ardatov, Nizhny Novgorod Region .
On February 5, 1931 he was arrested [3] , sentenced to five months in prison [4]
He died on July 7, 1931 in custody at a hospital in the Nizhny Novgorod factory colony [3] . As follows from a letter from Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky), the funeral was held on July 8: “He was buried in the clergy late in the evening and was buried in the New Cemetery. The children expressed a request to do everything as modestly as possible. ” He was buried in the New Cemetery of Nizhny Novgorod [9] .
