The son of a soldier. Initially, like his brother, he studied the violin, then switched to flute and in 1840 - 1842 . studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jean-Louis Tulou . In 1848 - 1872 The first flute of the Paris Opera, in 1868 - 1893 professor of the conservatory (among his students, Paul Taffanel and Georges Barrer ). The author of several dozens of compositions for a flute of didactic and salon character, as well as a well-known textbook ( Fr. Célèbre Méthode complète de Flûte ; 1880 ), subsequently finalized by Fernand Caratje and republished in 1956. He was friends with the artist Edgar Degas , who painted his portrait (1868 )
