Biography
Born in Highland Park , in 1941-1943 he studied at Amherst College (Massachusetts), in 1946 he graduated from the US Naval Academy . He served in the Navy for a year, then received a Rhodes scholarship to study at Exeter College, Oxford University in England, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1950 and a master of arts in 1954.
Later, he held various positions in the U.S. Navy: he commanded a minesweeper, destroyer and missile destroyer, worked in the office of the chief of naval operations, was an assistant secretary of defense for system analysis, and an assistant and consultant to the naval minister .
In 1970 he graduated from Harvard University Business School. He commanded a tactical group of aircraft carriers. In 1971-1972 - Director of the System Analysis Division of the US Navy. In 1972-1974, he was president of the United States Naval College . Since 1974 - Commander of the 2nd US Navy and NATO Attack Fleet in the Atlantic Ocean.
Since September 1975 - Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces in Southern Europe. Admiral (1975).
On February 8, 1977, President D. Carter was appointed director of the Central Intelligence and head of the Central Intelligence Agency , approved by the Senate on February 24, and took office on March 9. He headed the CIA until January 20, 1981. Leading the CIA, Turner remained in active military service for some time. However, on December 31, 1978, he quit the Navy.
After leaving the CIA, he was engaged in literary activities, gave lectures, on television, and was a member of the board of directors of the Monsanto Company . Retired as a senior fellow at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy.

In the 2008 film “ Charlie Wilson ’s War ” directed by Mike Nichols Turner, one of the characters is mentioned - Gust Avrakotos , played by Philip Seymour Hoffman , nominated for an Oscar for this role [1] . In the film " Operation Argo" in 2012, Philip Baker Hall reincarnated as Turner.
He died on January 18, 2018 [2] .
