The preliminary design of the M-250 was carried out at the MAI aircraft engine design department in July 1939. The technical design was developed at the MAI KB-2 from September 1939 to March 1940 under the direction of G.S. Skubachevsky and V.A. Dobrynina. An experimental batch of 5 engines was manufactured at the plant number 16 (Voronezh). Bench tests began on June 22, 1941. The engine refinement was carried out until September 1941. In 1943, it was planned to start mass production of the M-250 at plant No. 26 (Ufa). Work on the M-250 engine was discontinued in 1946. In total, 10 M-250 engines were produced.
