Human salt-water metabolism

Water-salt formulations of liquids

The body of an adult consists of 65% of water (60-70% of body weight). The liquid is divided [2] into:

  • Intracellular (40-45% of body weight)
  • Extracellular, which includes intercellular fluid (16% of body weight), blood plasma (5%) and lymph (2%)
  • Transcellular fluid (1-3%) - which includes cerebrospinal and intraocular fluids, as well as fluids of the abdominal cavity , pleura, pericardium , articular bags and gastrointestinal tract .

The distribution of fluid in a person by salt composition:

In medical practice, vascular and intercellular fluid are often equated.
