Biography
Born in the city of Resistance in a traditional Catholic family, Carrio when she was a teenager participated in a local beauty contest. [3] Carrio graduated from the Law School of the National University of Residency in 1978. Carrio transferred to the civil service as a technical consultant in the prosecutor's office of the city of Chaco [4] . In 1980, she became a state attorney [5]
She later taught constitutional law at her university (alma mater), and from 1986 to 1988 served as director of the department of human rights at the University of Buenos Aires [6]
Carrio entered politics at the request of her mentor, Raul Alfonsin. Carrio was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1994 and amended the article of the Constitution No. 75 on human rights [7] . She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in her native province of Chaco , from the Civil Radical Union (UCR) Party in 1995 and 1997. [8]
In 1999, Carrio was re-elected to the Congress of Argentina, where she headed the Committee on Corruption and Money Laundering, in 2001, she had disagreements with recriminations with the Minister of Economy Domingo Cavallo [9] This ended in a lawsuit at which Carrio submitted documents to the court , as evidence of corruption by Cavallo, which included Daniel Diaz, who was arrested in October on charges of fraud and counterfeiting securities [10]
In 2000, Carrio left the Civil Radical Union party , Carrio in 2002, together with his supporters (from the Democratic Socialist Party and other left- leaning politicians dissatisfied with the policies of their parties) created a new party called Alternativa para una República de Iguales (ARI).
Carrio participated in the 2003 presidential election and finished fifth with 14% of the vote. She returned to Congress in 2005, becoming a deputy from the city of Buenos Aires .
Carrio participated in the 2007 presidential election from the Civil Coalition party [11] In March 2007, she left the parliamentary powers to participate in these elections [12] Together with Ruben Giustiniani (chairman of the Socialist Party), Carrio received about 23% of the vote, taking second place after Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. She won the majority of votes in two of Argentina's three largest cities (Buenos Aires and Rosario), but she was defeated in the province of Buenos Aires, in the most populous region, and was unable to participate in the second round of elections [13] [14] .
After the 2007 election, Carrio announced that she would not run for the next presidential election, saying that she wants to increase her role as an “opposition leader” and seek to influence the future administration that will be elected based on the 2011 election [15] . In the 2009 elections, she formed a coalition with former allies, socialists [16] . Later, she revised the earlier decision to refuse to participate in the presidential election in 2011, and on December 12, 2010, she announced her candidacy for the upcoming elections in October 2011 [17] .
