The Jodrell Bank Observatory (originally the Jodrell Bank Experimental Station , later, in 1966–1999, Newuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories ) contains several radio telescopes , and is part of the Jodrell Bank Astrophysical Center of the University of Manchester . It plays an important role in the research of meteors , quasars , pulsars , masers and gravitational lenses , and has been actively involved in tracking spacecraft from the beginning of the space age.

History
The observatory was founded in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell , who wanted to study cosmic rays after his work on the radar during World War II .
At the beginning of the Cold War between the countries of the West and the USSR, the Jodrell-Bank radio telescope was the only instrument capable of detecting the launches of Soviet intercontinental missiles [2] .
Tools
The main instrument of the observatory is the B. Lovell radio telescope , the third of the largest full-circle telescopes in the world. In addition to him, the observatory has three more radio telescopes: Mark 2 , RT-13 and RT-7. The Jodrell Bank Observatory is also the base station of the MERLIN radio interferometer .
