Alboran ( Spanish: mar de Alborán , Arabic: بحر البوران ) is the westernmost sea in the [1] Mediterranean Sea .

It is located directly in front of the Strait of Gibraltar and reaches a length of about 400 km, and a width of 200 km, characterized by depths of 1000-1500 m, maximum depth - 2407 m - reaches in its easternmost part. The bottom morphology is heterogeneous, there are several underwater ridges, as well as internal depressions. The largest ridge, Alboran , extends from the north-east to the south-west and extends above sea level in the form of a small volcanic island of Alboran , located in the center of the basin. The ridge delimits the basin into three sub-pools: western, southern and eastern Alboran.
